The network reports inverse depth, so everything past a couple of metres compresses into the darkest few percent of the scale. This maps it logarithmically instead, giving equal ratios of distance equal shares of the scale. Measured on a room scene it takes the far third from ten distinct levels to seventy-nine.

Depth contours 0.00

A line at every fixed step of depth, as on a topographic map. A smooth ramp shows that two surfaces differ but not by how much; lines make it countable, and reveal gradients too shallow to see as colour.

Relief shading 0.60

Darkens the far side of each silhouette and shades hollows and ridges, so surface curvature reads as shape rather than as a flat band of colour. Applied as a bounded gain, so the colour scale still orders depth correctly.

Runs the network at the resolution it was trained on and applies the guided upsampling in full. Roughly half the frame rate, noticeably more structure.

Square input to the network, constrained to multiples of 14. Higher values sharpen object boundaries and cost throughput.

Temporal smoothing 0.35

Blends each depth frame with the previous one. Suppresses flicker; high values leave a motion trail.

Edge-aware detail 0.85

Steers the depth map by the camera image, so depth edges land on object outlines instead of being smeared across them by magnification. Too high on a strongly patterned surface can let texture bleed into the depth.

Adaptive quality

Lowers the input resolution when the measured frame time exceeds the budget, and raises it again once thermal headroom returns.

Depth is relative and affine-invariant, not metric. Identical brightness in two different frames does not imply identical distance.
